08.24.01: Pitching again. Two starts in the Gulf Coast League. Two innings. One hit, one hit batsman, two strikeouts. No runs. And a mention in the AJC, where Carroll Rogers said he would not figure in the club's post-season plans. Yeah, that kinda was a no-brainer. Oh well.

06.28.01: Today is Kevin McGlinchy's birthday. (And Chris Keldorf's.) As such, I figured I could take the time to search for some news. Lo and behold, I found this little gem at Roto Times... (If you go there, you'll notice there's been no news since March 13, so clearly I've not missed anything.)

"Kevin McGlinchy threw off a mound for 15 minutes at about 75 percent at the Braves' Florida training complex on Friday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. McGlinchy is not expected back any earlier than late July." which, actually, is rapidly approaching...

04.15.01: So Happy Easter (and Tax Day... yee-haw...). Actually there's absolutely nothing to report. I love my job but I'm astoundingly busy so I probably wouldn't update the page anyway, but, like I said, not one word. No news is good news?? Cheerio.

03.17.01: Hope? Optimism? Luck of the Irish? From our friend Carroll Rogers:

"Right-hander Kevin McGlinchy was feared to be lost for the season with a partial tear in his shoulder. But Dr. James Andrews was able to repair his labrum and shave down a bone spur arthroscopically, leaving open a possibility that he might pitch later this season.

'I'm relieved that I can go about my business now,' said McGlinchy, who might be doing light throwing in as early as six weeks. 'I've got something to shoot for. I'll be back, no doubt in my mind.'

The alternative would have been more serious, traditional surgery. McGlinchy pitched in only 10 games last season because of biceps tendinitis. He was in position to reclaim his job in the bullpen before feeling a twinge in his shoulder last Friday. He had surgery Tuesday in Birmingham."

03.13.01: The official word.

03.12.01: Well knock me over with a freakin' feather... surgery for a partially torn rotator cuff. This makes me wonder what exactly the deal is... it's hard to believe this just happened, since he's been having trouble with his shoulder since the start of last season, but on the other hand, he had all those MRIs and I guess nothing showed up. Weird, though. The bright side, I suppose, is that it's like Smoltzie -- now he finally knows what's what. And I won't have to update the web site very often, I imagine. :( Some happy news: Mario Lemieux just scored, again, and Tommy's been pitching well so far this spring. Not that I expected any less. :)

03.09.01: Shoot. Those pesky Mets. (hey, if you take out the first period, it still works!)

03.08.01: "Every outing is a big outing for [Kevin McGlinchy and Jason Marquis]," said manager Bobby Cox. Yeah, no pressure here. Admittedly, as long as they don't screw up royally, they ought to be on the team, but Damian Moss pretty much lost his shot 'cause of one outing, according to today's AJC, so who knows.

03.07.01: I posted this news on March 1, but I found this little gem today, and I like the way it's worded. Originally from Feb. 28, apparently...

"NEW PITCH: Reliever Kevin McGlinchy has been experimenting with a change-up. 'There's guys who've had some success with it around here,' he quipped, looking toward Tom Glavine's locker.

McGlinchy used a circle change while starting in the minors, but he abandoned the pitch when he got to the majors as a reliever two years ago.

'It's a good pitch to have when you don't have anything else,' said McGlinchy, who pitched sparingly last season because of shoulder problems."

03.05.01: Scoreless sixth. One hit, one walk, one strikeout. Works for me. Unfortunately, Tommy took the loss and the other Kevin didn't fare so well. And what on earth were the Mighty Ducks thinking, separating the Dynamic Duo???

03.02.01: Signed, sealed, and hopefully he'll deliver. "Only" $242,000, though -- outdone by 20-year-old. ;) (OK, to be completely accurate, it's yesterday's news, but I didn't have a chance to get it up here, so it becomes today's.)

03.01.01: This is so exciting! Today's news actually counts as an article! Comments: (a) I will never forgive Bobby Cox if McGlinchy is not on the team when they come to Houston April 23 and (b) I told you he had a change-up!

02.27.01: To prove I'm not one-dimensional: I just love Paul Kariya. Witness today's LA Times (from Elliot Teaford):

"Kariya left the ice Monday and said he's done speaking to reporters this season, waving his arms like a baseball umpire giving the safe sign. It's a running gag. He tells the team's media relations staff he's not talking, then proceeds to fill up reporters' notebooks."

02.23.01: Random thought: does Jason Marquis ever smile? Every picture I've ever seen of him, he seems to be trying so hard NOT to smile. He looks like he's gonna kill somebody. Just a thought.

Today's update, from Paul Newberry in Kissimmee:

"Reliever Kevin McGlinchy, hampered by a mysterious shoulder ailment last season, is convinced his problems are behind him. The right-hander has been throwing without pain during the early days of spring training while trying to recapture the gung-ho attitude that made him one of the Braves' most effective pitchers two years ago. 'I had nothing to lose,' McGlinchy recalled. 'I was rocking. I've got to get back to my old ways.'

In 1999, after jumping from Class A to the majors, he pitched in 64 games, going 7-3 with a 2.82 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 70 1-3 innings. Last year, McGlinchy managed only 8 1-3 innings in the big leagues because of shoulder stiffness. 'I'm getting my arm strong. My back is feeling good,' he said. 'I want a pain-free spring training.'

McGlinchy is usually one of the last players to leave the clubhouse each day, often several hours after the other pitchers have departed. 'I'm not going to take it easy,' he said. 'I want to make sure everything is right.' "

02.22.01: *Sigh.* Such a long time between updates. This is what happens when you move twice in six months. Also, nothing happened that was worth reporting, so, ya know, we didn't miss much. The MLB 2001 spring training media guide (and the MLB official web site) lists McGlinchy's birthday as 06/08/77... hmm. Anyway, here we go... from Carroll Rogers (I heard she was a Dook graduate! oh no!) in Kissimmee:

"Right-hander Kevin McGlinchy continues to progress after missing most of last season with shoulder tendinitis.

'Today was my best day,' he said Wednesday. 'It takes me a little longer to get loose now, and it's still in the back of my mind. But in the last couple days, I've let it loose. I'm building arm strength. It's coming back. I can see it.' "

I hesitate to include this, but what the heck -- it's interesting. Over the winter, I met Lynsey, who works for the G-Braves. In addition to learning that the head on top of his neck is not the only one Dax Norris shaves, she also got to meet McGlinchy's ditzy blonde girlfriend (at least at the time; I don't know if she's still around) when he was doing rehab there. Apparently, said ditzy blonde did not know what the concourse was. *Sigh.*
