Healthy McGlinchy gets no guarantees

Kissimmee, Fla. -- In addition to getting a look at the new strike zone, the Braves also got a closer look at Kevin McGlinchy when he pitched for 10 minutes in front of an umpire and most of the team Tuesday.

"He has looked good," manager Bobby Cox said.

McGlinchy missed almost all of 2000 with biceps tendinitis and is having to fight his way back into the bullpen, where two spots are open.

Cox said he hasn't ruled anybody out "from (Billy) Sylvester to (Joe) Slusarski, the oldest guy in camp. (Age) doesn't make any difference to me."

McGlinchy was the surprise of spring training in 1999, completing a jump basically from Class A to the majors. Sylvester, 24, could be that guy this year. He's giving McGlinchy his most competition, along with Jason Marquis.

"Nothing is etched in stone as far as me having a definite spot," McGlinchy said. "Nothing's free around here."

McGlinchy has pitched pain-free this spring, but he's not taking that for granted. He's still doing exercises to strengthen the muscles around his biceps to help prevent future problems.

"I'd like to say I'm out of the woods," McGlinchy said. "But I've still got to stay on top of this."

Adding an old twist, McGlinchy has gone back to throwing a change-up. "It's a good pitch to have when you can't find your grip," McGlinchy said. "A splitter, you have to grip it just right every time."
