05.31.00: So here we go again. I should scan some more pictures sometime. From Carroll Rogers:
"The Braves received word from Dr. Joe Chandler in Atlanta that Kevin McGlinchy's sore right shoulder doesn't appear any worse than originally diagnosed. An MRI after his second trip to the disabled list this season revealed no tear in his shoulder. The Braves plan to keep McGlinchy inactive for eight to 10 days and then send him on a rehabilitation assignment."
05.25.00: Bad. Bad. Bad.
"It's actually gotten better since the last time, but I can still feel it which is not good," said McGlinchy, who estimates his arm flares up about every fifth pitch. "The past couple days I've been getting treatment, hoping it would go away and it didn't."
As for the prospects of it being a serious problem, McGlinchy, who had a clean MRI his last trip on the disabled list, said: "Yeah, it's scary. This is the first time I've been through something like this. There's a lot of season left. I've got to be patient and that's part of the learning process, too. It's pretty disappointing. I haven't gotten a chance to go out and add to last year."
05.24.00: This is not good. You know, I was watching the game last night, and everything was going smoothly and then suddenly, Bobby Cox pops out of the dugout. I'm not a particularly good lip reader or anything, but it really looked like McGlinchy said he was fine. Then they replayed the pitch, and I could see where he had dropped his shoulder and all, but still, it didn't look bad or anything. And in the ninth inning (I think) Pete and Joe reported that, upon examination, he was OK and nothing hurt. So I went to bed fairly content and then today I see that he's gone back on the DL. Argh.
05.20.00: Sigh. At least the new haircut looked damn good. ;)
05.16.00: URGH! You know, I really am glad Bobby Cox gave McGlinchy a shot at the save, but gee whiz. He does still seem to be having trouble with the first batter, and seeing as how he just got off the DL, it's kinda questionable. And I just gotta say, that check swing was a strike a couple of weeks ago when Tom Glavine was batting. I forget the situation exactly, but if you saw it, you know what I'm talking about. Oh well. We'll hope for better things next time. And one more thing. McGlinchy didn't walk a single batter when he was with Greenville, but he's walked 4 in 3.2 innings in Atlanta. Why?
05.14.00: Yee-haw! McGlinchy activated. Too bad they sent down Ligtenberg. And then he even pitched! Did his best John Rocker imitation, too, what with the walk and the hit. From our friend Bill Zack (I think):
"The Braves shipped out Ligtenberg, who was 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 11 appearances, and activated Kevin McGlinchy from the disabled list. McGlinchy convinced Cox he was ready by throwing a shutout inning Tuesday and Thursday with Class AA Greenville, striking out four.
'I've been waiting for this day,' said McGlinchy, who went on the DL April 17 with a stiff right shoulder. 'I feel strong. I'm spotting my pitches pretty good and my confidence is good.'
Ligtenberg was the first player to greet McGlinchy with a handshake Saturday afternoon in the visitors clubhouse at Veterans Stadium. The move will give Ligtenberg a chance to pitch regularly, which he needs to build his arm strength and sharpen his pitches.
'I didn't know whose place I was taking, so this is news to me,' McGlinchy said. 'I kind of feel bad, but I guess that's the business of it. I'm sure (Ligtenberg) will be back up in no time.' "
More on Ligtenberg and other Braves notes.
05.11.00: Pitched the eighth inning again. Struck out three. G-Braves won this time. Wish they'd activate him already...
05.10.00: McGlinchy pitched the eighth inning for Greenville against West Tennessee last night. Didn't give up anything, one strikeout. (G-Braves lost.) I can't find anything else about it. He's supposed to pitch again Thursday, which really makes little sense, as the Braves are worried about him pitching back-to-back games. Well, how will this tell them anything?
05.08.00: Then there's this: (From Jay Stone today)
"McGlinchy throws: Reliever Kevin McGlinchy, on the disabled list retroactive to April 17 with stiffness in his right shoulder, threw on the side before Sunday's game and came away encouraged. He threw all his pitches and felt no pain. 'I probably threw about 90-plus percent,' he said. 'The last week I've felt really good. I had a pretty good fastball, and there was no pain. That was the big thing.' "
05.07.00: Distress. Frustration. And on top of that, John Rocker blew Tommy's game on Friday so I am feeling intense dislike towards him right now. From Bill Zack:
"Kevin McGlinchy will probably rejoin Class AA Greenville next week to make another two or three rehab appearances before being activated from the disabled list. Although the second-year reliever threw in the bullpen Friday and says the stiffness in his shoulder has disappeared, Cox wants him to be able to work in consecutive games and he's not ready yet.
'I don't know if I can go two days in a row,' McGlinchy admitted. 'When they take me off (the DL) they want me to be able to go every day. Right now I'm in a holding pattern.' "
05.03.00: News from the second rehab appearence (also from the Birmingham News):
"McGlinchy, bouncing back from shoulder stiffness, didn't match his Sunday performance when he struck out all three Barons he faced. He surrendered an unearned run on two hits while throwing 17 pitches. The Barons scored their lone run in the inning as Ryan Long reached second on a single that was kicked by center fielder Demond Smith. Chris Heintz then reached base as McGlinchy muffed a squibber back toward the mound. Long moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Battersby sacrifice fly.
'I think I used all my bullets the first night,' McGlinchy said.
McGlinchy nonetheless pronounced himself ready to rejoin Atlanta's bullpen, although he said he's not sure the timetable for his return.
'I'm ready,' McGlinchy said. 'I'm just waiting to see what happens. I feel good. My arm feels all right.' "
Here's the full text. Avery started this game. 6 IP, 3 ER.
Rather distressing that he gets more ink when he's injured and playing for the away team in Birmingham than he has all season with the Braves. Big fish in a small pond, I guess, but still. This certainly presents an interesting dilemma for the Braves, though. Now Bruce Chen (the "Chenner") is 4-0 and pitching well, but Bobby Cox still seems enamored with John Burkett, for reasons only the man himself can fathom. Then you can throw Ligtenberg in the mix. What to do, what to do?
05.01.00: A performance review (from the Birmingham News):
"Atlanta reliever Kevin McGlinchy, on a rehab assignment with Greenville (11-12), replaced Marquis in the seventh with the Barons leading 6-1. McGlinchy, who had experienced shoulder stiffness this season, struck out all three batters he faced - Joe Crede, Jeff Inglin and Rowand. 'It feels great, tremendous ... to finally feel healthy,' McGlinchy said after the 18-pitch performance. 'It was worth the two-hour ride. I've been hurting for a couple of weeks. I had all three pitches working and some velocity.'
Said Rowand: 'He was hitting his spots. He was stretching the strike zone out and he had a good split finger (pitch) going. He kept hitting the outside corner and getting farther and farther off.'
McGlinchy said he will make one more appearance in the series, which is expected to be Tuesday, then come off the disabled list. He had experienced shoulder stiffness last season, too, but this time it didn't respond to treatment.
'I just never got better,' McGlinchy said. 'The trainers did everything they could do. I'm glad I didn't lose anything.' "
Here's the whole article, if you're really interested.
And Tom Glavine won again; he's 5-0 and has only given up 6 hits and one run in his last 17 innings. :)
