Hit .579 his senior year at Malden High School as a center fielder/pitcher, with 22 RBI and 25 runs scored. He was named co-MVP of the Greater Boston League in 1995. (And the Braves drafted him to be a closer!)

Drafted in the fifth round of the 1995 draft by the Atlanta Braves, but chose to attend Central Florida Community College instead. Went 8-2 in 1996 and helped lead CFCC to Mid-Florida Conference Championship.

Signed by John Stewart in 1996 and was sent to rookie-league Danville, where he led the Appalachian League with a 1.13 ERA and was named the league's top prospect.

Named Braves #2 Prospect prior to 1997 season; named Durham Bulls pitcher of the year in 1997.

Named to the Carolina League All-Star team in 1998, was the starter for the Southern Division.
